True Victory

Run to win. It’s the goal of most runners. They train for strength and endurance, and make rest a priority. Runners stay hydrated and well nourished, only eating food that fuels their body for maximum performance. Whether sprinting, hurdling or running a marathon, everyone on the track shares a common goal; to cross the finish line, first. To win the gold medal.

The race track can be dangerous. Someone may stumble over a hurdle, pull a muscle, or fall just shy of the finish line. A quick glance over the shoulder to check the status of an opponent is a rookie move that causes critical time loss, and may cost the race. One of the most selfless acts of compassion, is for a runner to see a fellow competitor in distress, and decide in a spilt second to go back and help the fallen runner complete the race. To forfeit victory, an opportunity for first place, in service to someone else, is the portrait of an extraordinary person.

The same is true in the spiritual race, where the runners end goal is to hear The Master declare well done. A disciplined runner maintains focus and keeps their eye on the prize. They may encounter someone on the track struggling, doing their personal best, but lagging far behind and in distress. The disciplined runner uses this opportunity to go back for them and assess their need. They may be dehydrated or injured or exhausted. They may be discouraged because the race is harder than they expected, or they may have gone off course and are ready to quit. Whatever their circumstance, offer a refreshing drink of water, a comforting shoulder to lean on, a quiet corner for a few moments to rest, or warm words of encouragement. Remind them we’re running the same race, and though our pace may differ, together we will stay the course.

At the close of our race, the victory is not determined by the time on the stop clock. Whether we came in first or last or anywhere in between is not important. We persevered in spite of the setbacks, obstacles, fear and doubt, because we were determined to please God. The true victor is the one who crosses the finish line and brings others along. The true victor receives pure gold.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Galatians 6:1

His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Matthew 25:21
